Mt. Everest is one of the most attractive sceneries during Tibet tour. But if you have very budget time, you could ride a bicycle along China-Nepal Highway excluding Mt. Everest. In the first three days you may ride from Lhasa City to Shigatse by way of Yamdrok Lake, Langkatse and Gyantse. It is about 300 kilometers long and spends 4 days. The sceneries along the way are more beautiful and amazing than the way via Nimu and Peace Airport, but the road condition is much rough. Yamdrok Lake is one of the holy lakes of Tibet and it looks like a shining blue silk among the mountains. It is worthy to visit if you have enough time. Firstly ride a bicycle to Qyushui County in Tibet from Lhasa City. It is about 61 kilometers far and the road condition is fine without any up slopes. And then ride a bicycle to Nimu and overnight there. It is about 70 kilometers far and the road condition is fine, too.
Most of the hostels in Nimu cost about 150 RMB per person per bed.
The road condition from Nimu to Peace Airport is very rough and it is about 100 kilometers long. Some natural disasters may be happened on the way such as the landslide. You could camp nearby the airport.
It is approximately 57 kilometers far from Peace Airport to Shigatse Prefecture. The road condition is fine. You will have a chance to visit Tashilhunpo Monastery. It is the largest and the most famous monastery in Shigatse Prefecture. It was built by the 1st Panchen – Khedrup Gelebasang. He was the 1st great disciple of Tsongkhapa – the great founder of Gelug Sect. The visiting route of Tashilhunpo Monastery is Jobaf Hall, Sisong Nanjie, Chinese Buddha Hall, Panchen Lazhang, Qukang Summer Hall, and Cuoqin Great Hall.
It is about 110 kilometers long from Shigatse to Daoban. Daoban is available for repairing and inspecting the situation of railway and highway. Tourists could pay some money to overnight there sometimes. There is not any small store for lunch halfway. You'd better take some solid food.
It is about 67 kilometers far. It is earth road and full of up and down slopes. Latse is located in middle part of Shigatse. Tourists could travel northwest to Sinkiang via Latse along No. 219 National Highway during Tibet tour.
From Latse to Xegar it is about 100 kilometers long. The road condition is rough. You will reach Xegar by way of Gyatsola Mountain Pass. It is 5220 meters high. There are some Sichuan Restaurants in Xegar.
It is about 47 kilometers far from Xegar to Rongbuk Monastery and it is about 8 kilometers far from Rongbuk Monastery to Mt. Everest Base Camp.
It is about 110 kilometers in total. The road condition is fine.
It is about 104 kilometers long from Gutso to No. 40 Daoban. It is earth road. You will reach No. 40 Daoban via Tongla Mountain. Tongla Mountain is about 5050 meters high. After passing Tongla Mountain there is a long down slope to No. 40 Daoban.
It is about 80 kilometers far from Daoban to Bahrabide by way of Nyelam and Zham Port. It is rough road. Nyelam is located 4630 meters high and Zham Port is located about 2400 meters high.
It is about 98 kilometers long. There is a long up slope when you ride close to Kathmandu.
