For the protection of the special folk customs, cultural relics and ecological environment, and in consideration of the limited transportation condition, basic service facilities and reception capacity in Tibet, the government requires tourists not holding a Chinese passport to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit before enter into Tibet, including foreign tourists, tourists from Taiwan and overseas Chinese without a Chinese passport or the passport of the Hong Kong /Macau Special Administrative Region. At the same time, the government stimulates that the foreign journalists and diplomats can't enter into Tibet as ordinary tourists. As a professional Tibet tour operator, Tibet Tour would like to provide information regarding the necessary documents for the Tibet Travel Permit application for tourists planning to pay a visit to Tibet in the near future.

Necessary Documents for Tibet Travel Permit Application – Tourists Hold a China Tourist Visa

Foreign tourists willing to pay a visit to Tibet are only required to provide the scanned copy of your passport and visa if you are holding a China Tourist Visa. Also, information regarding your age and occupation should also be provided. For tourists willing to make a Tibet tour from Nepal, it should be noted that the China Visa issued by the embassy in the other countries/cities would be regarded as invalid if you are entering into Tibet via Nepal. Instead, tourists are required to apply for the China Tourist Visa from the China Embassy in Kathmandu. Generally, it takes 3-5 work days to obtain the visa, which means tourists should arrive in Kathmandu in advance.

Necessary Documents for Tibet Travel Permit Application – Tourists Hold other China Visas

A large number of foreign tourists planning a Tibet tour are not holding a China Tourist Visa. Instead, they are holding a China Student Visa, Visit Visa, Work Visa or Settlement Visa. Tourists holding these types of China Visa are required to provide different documents for the Tibet Travel Permit application.

Except for the scanned copy of the passport, tourists holding a China Student Visa are also required to provide a student certification provided by your college/university. For tourists holding a China Visit Visa, the invitation letter and a certification provided by your inviter should be prepared. For tourists holding a China Work Visa, relevant work certification provided by your employer should be prepared. The residence permit should be provided for the Tibet Travel Permit application for tourists holding a China Settlement Visa.

There were branch offices of Tibet Tourism Bureau in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Golmud in earlier years. These branch offices could help tourists to deal with the Tibet Travel Permit application. Currently, tourists' Tibet Travel Permit application could only be handled by the head office of Tibet Tourism Bureau. Tourists are requires to submit their application to TTB at least 15 days in advance. Generally, Tibet Tour would suggest our clients to send us the necessary documents around 20 days in advance. For tourists entering into Tibet by air, the original copy of Tibet Travel Permit should be provided while boarding on the train to Lhasa. Actually, tourists are required to provide the scanned copy of your Tibet Travel Permit while booking the air tickets to Lhasa.
