Mt. Shishapangma enjoys high reputation among the mountaineering enthusiasts though there is only a small number of mountaineers conquered it successfully. With an altitude of more than 8000 meters, Mt. Shishapangma is the sole mountain entirely in China. Therefore, a large number of tourists and mountaineers planning a Tibet tour would like to take Mt. Shishapangma into their consideration.

Mt. Shishapangma Travel Information – Brief Introduction of Mt. Shishapangma

Shishapangma means severe cold and changeable climate in Tibetan. It is located in the middle reaches of Himalayas. There are two peaks with similar height near Mt. Shishapangma – one of them is about 8008 meters above the sea level and is about 200 meters away to the northwest of Mt. Shishapangma while the other peak enjoys an altitude of 7966 meters and is about 400 meters away to the northwest of Mt. Shishapangma.

Mt.Shishapangma enjoys the lowest elevation among the 14 mountains which are more than 8000 meters above the sea level, but that doesn't mean it is easier to conquer Mt. Shishapangma. There are few domestic mountaineers climbed to the top of Mt. Shishapangma successfully. It is extremely difficult to conquer Mt. Shishapangma for it has a changeable climate and the topography here is pretty steep. In addition, the crisscrossed glaciers and frequent snow slide at Mt. Shishapangma add more challenges for mountaineers.

Mt. Shishapangma Travel Information – Climate & Best Travel Season

Mt. Shishangpangma enjoys a similar climate with Mt. Everest (the highest peak above the sea level). The period between June and September is the rainy season, and there is always severe climate characterized by frequent rainstorm, sudden snow or hail during this period. Also, the mountains here are always hidden in the clouds or mist. The period between November and February is the coldest season in Mt. Shishapangma Area. The average temperature is -50 to -40 Celsius, and the extremely low temperature would even reach -60 Celsius while the maximum wind velocity would reach 90 meters per second.

The period between March and May is the transit season of the windy season to the rainy season while the period between September and October is the transit season of the rainy season to the windy season. These two transit seasons are widely regarded as the best season for mountaineering activities at Mt. Shishapangma for there might be good climate during those transit seasons. Therefore, April, May, October and November are the best seasons for tourists interested in the magnificent mountain scenery of Mt. Shishapangma for there might be good visibility during that period.

Mt. Shishapangma Travel Information – Travel Route

There are two travel routes to Mt. Shishapangma. Tourists could head to Old Tingri in Shigatse Prefecture after enough acclimation in Lhasa. With a length around 600 kilometers, the section between Lhasa and Old Tingri is asphalted. There is a protection station of Mt. Shishapangma at Dalilong Village in Gyelong County about 100 kilometers away from Old Tingri. Road condition of this section is pretty poor, unpaved soil road. It should be noted that a Military Permit is required for tourists willing to pay a visit to Mt. Shishapangma.
