Lhasa and Nagqu Attractions Recommended by Tibet Tourism Bureau

The attractions of Lhasa City and Nagqu Prefecture are characteristic of the folk customs. The best time to travel to Lhasa City and Nagqu Prefecture is from August to September every year. During the time, you will have a chance to take part in the Shoton Festival, Horse Racing Festival and other interesting festivals, etc.

Potala Palace

Potala Palace is commonly known as the second Puto Mountain of Tibet. Puto Mountain is one of the top 4 famous Buddhist Sacred Mountains of China, situated in Zhejiang Province. Potala Palace is actually a magnificent and splendid building group over a high mountain. It was originally built by Songtsen Gampo when he got married with Princess Wencheng of Tang Dynasty. It highlights Tibetan architecture style and is constructed back against the mountains. After rebuilt of the 17th Century, it has been acted as the residence of successive Dalai Lama in winter. And it has been regarded as the religious and political center since then on. There are numerous treasures preserved well in Potala Palace. It is also regarded as the art palace of Tibet. In 1994, it was listed as world cultural heritage. If you don't visit her during Tibet tour, you could not say you have been to Tibet.

Tsayepa Monastery

Tsayepa Monastery is located in Datse County, not very far from Lhasa City. During the period of the 7th Century, Songtsen Gampo ordered his man to build this monastery for one of his imperial concubines. There are about 108 caves on the steep cliffs of Tsayepa Monastery. Lots of great masters once lived in the caves and cultivated themselves there.

Ramoche Temple

Ramoche Temple is located about 500 meters north far from Jokhang Temple and protected by the state. It is approximately 500 meters north far from Barkhor Street. It is well known along with Jokhang Temple together. It was firstly established in Tang Dynasty. During the period of the 7th Century, Princess Wencheng of Tang Dynasty ordered her men to build it. Many handicrafts, Buddhist scriptures, classics and medical books, etc, are preserved well in Ramoche Temple. The 12-year-old Sakyamuni Statue was introduced into Tibet region by Princess Wencheng and highly respected in Ramoche Temple at that time. Afterwards, the 12-year-old Sakyamuni Statue has been moved into Jokhang Temple till now.

Namtso Lake

Namtso Lake lies in the middle part of Tibet region, acted as the second larger salt water lake of China. It is the highest large lake throughout the world, too. It is about 4718 meters high. It stretches about 70 meters long from the east to the west, and about 30 kilometers long from the south to the north. It covers an area of 1920 square kilometers.

Namtso Lake is formed like a sleeping Buddha. There are 19 small islets around Namtso Lake and 4 monasteries on the lake. The four monasteries respectively symbolize different emotions of Buddha. It is said that Namtso Lake is the mother of Nyenchen Tanglha Mountain and the daughter of the Sakka. It is greatly believed by the devotees to the Buddha.
