In Lhasa, even in whole Tibet, you often can see Tibetan with prayer wheel in hand and chant the scripture, walk along certain route toward clockwise direction. That's the circumambulation. It is a popular solemn and sacred religious ceremony in Tibet. Tibetan Buddhism believers also practice themselves through this way. In Lhasa, there are three circumambulations. The first one is the gallery around the main hall of Jokhang Temple in the Jokhang Temple, which named "Langkhor" in Tibetan language. This circumambulation has thousands prayer wheels. On this circumambulation, there are many piety pilgrims and foreign visitors. To stir the copper prayer wheel with hands, you will hear hissing sound.
The second circumambulation is the street around the Jokhang Temple. In the 7th Century when the Jokhang Temple just built, there are many pilgrims' tents. Later, some businessmen built houses at there. At last, it became the Barkhor Street. If you walk along the Barkhor Street, you can by some goods while circumambulating. Passing by these two kilometers long "Barkhor" which integrate religion and common custom, myth and reality is equal to walking by the whole Tibet.
The third circumambulation is "Linkhor. This longest circumambulation first was around the whole Lhasa city, starting from Jokhang Temple, Ramoche Monastery, passing by old city and waking around the Potala Palace at last. In the morning, you can see various pilgrims on the street, and most of them are old people.
The center of Lhasa is Barkhor Street, and the Jokhang Temple is the center of Barkhor Street. The axis center of the three circumambulations in Lhasa is Jokhang Temple. If you can take a bird's-eye view, we will find that the circumambulations almost cover the whole snow-covered region.
