Health Tips for Tibet Tour in August

Update: Jul. 6th, 2013

Shoton Festival in August

Generally, the period between July and September is regarded as the peak season of Tibet tour. It is predicted that the number of tourists coming to Tibet will be the most in early August this year for the most noted Tibetan festival - Shoton Festival will be celebrated on August 6th in 2013. With the coming of the peak season of Tibet tour this year, Tibet Tour would like to provide some health tips for tourists planning a Tibet tour in August.

According to the latest news, the number of visitors coming to Tibet keeps increasing since April. Both the domestic and overseas tourists coming to Tibet are very worried about the possible high altitude sickness at the very first. But after 1-2 days acclimation in Lhasa with an altitude around 3500 meters, most of the tourists could head toward scenic spots with much high altitude, such as Namtso Lake with an altitude of 4718 meters and Mt. Everest Base Camp with an altitude around 5200 meters.

How to avoid the high altitude sickness has been the largest concern for tourists planning to pay a visit to Tibet Plateau. As a professional Tibet tour operator, Tibet Tour would always suggest our clients to take some Rhodiola roasea about 2 weeks in advance of arriving in Tibet. Except for the physical preparation, the mental preparation before going to Tibet is also very important for avoiding the high altitude sickness. Most of the visitors coming to Tibet would suffer various levels of shortness of breath, choking sensation in the chest and some other anoxia symptoms. But that doesn't mean these visitors could not get to the high plateau environment.

For tourists entering into Tibet by air, the possible high altitude sickness will appear in 12-14 hours. Hence, tourists should not be too excited or get involved in some strenuous exercises, just walk slowly and have a good rest in the hotel on the arrival day and save enough energy for the next sightseeing day in Lhasa City. It takes more time to get adapted to the plateau environment once you suffered some severe high altitude sickness symptoms. It is said the local Tibetan style food and beverage, such as the butter oil tea and Tsamapa is helpful in getting adapted to the high plateau environment.

Tourists making a Tibet tour by train might be worried about their physical health on the train. Actually, this worry is not necessary at all. The oxygen supply is available for every passenger between Golmud and Lhasa. Besides, there is sufficient oxygen content in each coach. The only problem is that both the hard berth and the soft berth are in great demand in the peak season of Tibet tour. Tourists planning to take the train to get to Tibet are strongly suggested to confirm your trip plan earlier so as to leave your Tibet tour operator enough time to help you to issue the train tickets. In addition, it is necessary to prepare some solid food before boarding on the train. There is dinning coach on the train, but there are few choices in food due to the limited condition.
