Best Time to Reach the Top of Mt. Everest

Update: Mar. 11th, 2013

Top of Mt. Everest

May is the mountaineering season of Mt. Everest – the highest peak above the sea level. Actually most of the year is not suitable for any mountaineering activities in mountain areas with an altitude of 8000 meters for the monsoon is very strong in the upper air. The gale would be weaker in the upper air when it changes its direction in a certain period in spring and autumn, and that short period would be the best time to reach the top of Mt. Everest.

The period between June and September is the rainy season of Mt. Everest. The strong southeast monsoon would always cause awful climate characterized by frequent torrential rain, clouds and mists and suddenly heavy snow or hailstone. The period between November and February is the coldest season of Mt. Everest due to the control of the northwest cold current. The average temperature in this period is between 40 Celsius and 50 Celsius, and the extremely low temperature here even reaches -60 Celsius. The maximum wind speed in this between November and February is about 90 meters per second. The spring of Mt. Everest between early March and late May is the season in which the wind season turns to the rainy season. The autumn of Mt. Everest between early September and late October is the season in which the rainy season turns to the wind season. The weather might be fine during those two transition seasons which are widely regarded as the best time to do some mountaineering activities at Mt. Everest.

Mt. Everest is located at the border between China and Nepal. In the south of Mt. Everest is the India Mainland which is located to the west of Bengal Bay. Generally, it is the best time to reach the top of Mt. Everest when the continental cold current starts to retreat to the north in May. The interfacial migration of the high pressure and low pressure is always accompanied with the formation of the spiral airflow. Hence, the formation and northward movement of the spiral airflow above Bengal Bay has been the signal of reaching the top of Mt. Everest. There would be strong gale if the mountaineers reach to the top of Mt. Everest too earlier while the turn of the monsoon would be finished if you reach the top of Mt. Everest to late. Mostly, the best time to reach the top of Mt. Everest is in certain time window which lasts for about one week in May. Most of the mountaineers succeeded in conquering Mt. Everest reached to the top during that time window, according to statistics.

For tourists only want to take an overlook of Mt. Everest, the April, May, September and October are the best time. Rongbuk Monastery with an altitude of 5145 meters and Mt. Everest Base Camp with an altitude of 5200 meters are the lodging sites for tourists wiling to enjoy the sunrise of Mt. Everest. Warm clothes and sleeping bag, as well as solid food should be prepared in advance for the accommodation here is pretty limited.
