Buddha Exhibition at Tsurphu Monastery

It is reported that Tsurphu Monastery will hold a solemn Buddha Exhibition Ceremony on May 21st 2013. The annual Buddha Exhibition Ceremony at Tsurphu Monastery would be held on April 11th according to the Tibetan calendar. On this day, the lamas in the monastery will carry out the giant embroid Thangka of Sakyamuni and opened it under the sunshine. A large number of devout pilgrims would come here for worshipping.

Buddha exhibition is a traditional religious ceremony of Tibetan Buddhism. The Buddha Exhibition Ceremony at Tashilhunpo Monastery, Drepung Monastery and Tsurphu Monastery enjoy high reputation among the followers of Tibetan Buddhism in different corners of Tibet. The pilgrims would come here for worshipping, repenting or praying for safeness for all living creatures and harmony in the world. After the Buddha Exhibition Ceremony, the monastery will also "invite" the giant thangka of Sakyamuni back to the palace.

The Tibetan Buddhism culture has a wide distribution in China and there are a large number of followers in Gansu Province, Qinghai Province and Sichuan Province. Tibetan Buddhism has several sects, including the Nyingma Sect, Gelug Sect and Karma Kargyu Sect. Karma Kargyu Sect is quite noted for its living Buddha incarnation system.

Tsurphu Monastery, about 60 kilometers away to the west of Lhasa, is located at the upper reaches of Tsurphu River. It is the main monastery of Karma Kargyu Sect in Tibet. With a history of 800 years, Tshurphu Monastery was reconstructed in 1980s. The basic facilities and transportation at Tsurphu Monastery were greatly improved in recent years. The government invested more than 2 million RMB in the transportation improvement project of Tsurphu Monastery. Currently, the road between Gurong Bridge and Tsurphu Monastery has been asphalted. Lamas, pilgrims and tourists could spend less time on the way to Tsurphu monastery than ever. It takes only about 2 hours driving to get to Tsurphu Monastery from Lhasa.

Tsurphu Monastery is highly respected as the most important monastery of Karma Kargyu by its followers. The living Buddha reincarnation system created by First Karmapa was carried out in Tsurphu Monastery firstly and then widely spread to the other sects of Tibetan Buddhism. Tsurphu Monastery has been the practice place of the excellent celebrities, including the Karmapas. The constructions of Tsurphu Monastery represent the traditional Tibetan art achievements.

The magnificent construction complex of Tsurphu Monastery centers on the assembly hall, including the shrines and chapels, and libraries for the important Buddhism classics and scriptures, institute of Buddhism studies and the residence of the Buddhists. Tourists making a Tibet tour and planning to pay a visit to the ancient monastery will have the chance to witness the rare and precious cultural relics in Tsurphu Monastery. The ancient monastery tablet carved with ancient Tibetan is of great significance in the research of the politic, economic and religion in Tubo Kingdom Period. Most of the historical and cultural relics in Tsurphu Monastery are well preserved.
