According to statistics provided by Tibet Sub-office of China Civil Aviation Administration, the total passenger throughput of Tibet aircraft industry reached 2.75 million person-times. It creates a new record in the civil aviation history in Tibet.

Local government and relevant departments keep putting great emphasis in creating Tibet into a world class tourism destination recent years. To improve the reception ability, the construction of the infrastructure was accelerated. To boom the aircraft industry, local government encourages the air lines open more direct flights between Lhasa/Nyingchi and some cities both at home and abroad.

It is reported that Tibet opened 13 new air lines in 2013, and the total number of air lines opened in Tibet reached 49. There are totally 26469 flights landed on and took off in the airports in Tibet, and that number has increased 23.1 percent compared to the same period of the last year. The number of flights land on and take off in Tibet reached 100 sorties in the peak days.

Currently, there are five airports opened to civil passengers in Tibet, including the Lhasa Gonggar Airport, Nyingchi Milin Airport, Qamdo Bangda Airport, Shigatse Peace Airport and Ngari Gunsa Airport. The total passenger throughput in 2013 is 2758955 person-times, among which 43706 of them are foreign tourists. The total passenger throughput Lhasa Gonggar Airport is 2296958 person-times, and that increased 25.5 percent compared to the same period of last year. Also, the total number of foreign passengers increased 17:02 compared to the same period of last year.

Tibet is planning to attach more importance in opening new air lines in 2014. Tibet Civil Aviation Administration is planning to make the total passenger throughput in Tibet breaks 3 million person-times in 2014. Tourists planning a Tibet tour by air in 2014 will have more choices in the entrance city. Generally, there are fewer discounts in the flight tickets to Tibet between July and October for there is large demand in the peak season. On contrary, there are always preferable discount in the flight tickets to Tibet in the shoulder and low season between November and April.

Except for travel to Tibet bi air, entering into Tibet through the Qinghai-Tibet Railway are the most popular ways for tourists both at home and abroad. The world famous Qinghai-Tibet Railway starts from Xining and ends at Lhasa. Currently, there are direct trains to Lhasa from Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lanzhou and Xining. It is reported that the extending section of Qinghai-Tibet Railway – Lhasa-Shigatse Railway under construction will be completed and put on rail in October 2014. The opening of the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway will provide great convenience for local Tibetans in Shigatse and tourists willing to pay a visit to Shigatse during their Tibet tour.

Tourists planning to travel to Tibet in early 2014 should note that the road to Namtso Lake might be closed due to the heavy snow. Therefore, it is necessary to collect accurate information regarding the specific weather condition and road condition before heading to Namtso Lake from Lhasa. The road condition of the highway to Shigatse and Tsedang is rarely influenced by the weather condition all year around.
