Number of Tibetan antelope in Hoh Xil Increases after Qinghai-Tibet Railway been put into operation for 7 years

Tibetan antelopes in Hoh Xil

The running Tibetan antelopes in Hoh Xil National Natural Reserve have been one of the most attractive views along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The world famous Qinghai-Tibet Railway leads to Lhasa from Xining via several national natural reserves, including the Hoh Xil National Natural Reserve, the Three Rivers' Source Natural Reserve and Qiangtang National Natural Reserve. With an average altitude of more than 4000 meters, these natural reserves are the inhabitance and living area of the rare Tibetan antelopes. To better introduce the Tibetan antelopes to tourists both at home and abroad, the broadcaster on the Tibet trains would make a brief introduction about the Tibetan antelopes in Tibetan, Chinese and English. Tourists would have the chance to get some general knowledge regarding the ecological protection, the reproduction, migration and protection of the Tibetan antelopes.

Qinghai-Tibet Railway is not only the longest and highest railway on the plateau, but also an ecological and green cultural gallery. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company has invested 0.195 billion RMB into the improvement of the ecological environment and the protection of wild animals along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway successively. The living habit and migration routes of the Tibetan antelopes had been taken into consideration in the designing period of Qinghai-Tibet Railway. About 3 Green Galleries were constructed to ensure the migration and reproduction of the Tibetan antelope and some other wild animals.

The front line railway workers have devoted themselves into the protection of the ecology and wild animals since Qinghai-Tibet Railway was opened to traffic. The workers working in the railway section between Golmud and Lhasa would do report on the movement and migration of the wild animals. The motor vehicles would stop working if the wild animals are migrating. Ensure the smooth migration of the wild animals and the ecological recovery has been the conscious actions for the front line workers along Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

It is reported that the number of Tibetan antelopes in and around Hoh Xil National Natural Reserve has increased to 60, 000 from 50,000 in 2006 after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has been put into operation for 7 years. Every summer, the Tibetan antelopes would departure for different regions through the Green Galleries to complete their annual reproduction trip.

Hoh National Natural Reserve is noted as the Third Polar on the Earth for its severe environment and awful climate which are not suitable for living. But the rare Tibetan antelopes and some other wild animals are living in this restricted zone for human beings. According to statistics, there are nearly 230 species of wild animals living in Hoh Xil Reserve, among which dozens of them are under state key protection.
