Medog Highway in Tibet was opened to traffic on Oct.31st, 2013

The Medog Highway in Nyinhchi Prefecture of Tibet Autonomous Region was opened to traffic on October 31st, 2013. The opening of Medog Highways remarks that Medog County gets rid of the name of "One of the sole county which is not served by highway in China". It will be more convenient for tourists planning to travel to Medog County.

There was no highway to Medog County due to its high altitude, perilous topography and severe climate condition in history. It was the one and only county which is not served by highway in China till the end of October this year. Now, a new history has been written in this remote county. Medog County will be a new attractive and challenging tourism destination in Tibet. With rich plants and animals resources and unique geological structure, Medog County has been a hot spot for scientists here for scientific research and tourists here for sightseeing or adventure in the past years. Medog County ranks first among the top 10 trekking routes around China. Meanwhile, Medog County enjoys high reputation among visitors who've been there.

Before the construction and operation of the Medog Highway, tourists willing to visit Medog County have to trek for about 4 days from Paizhen. The whole Medog County, including its county seat was lack in materials seriously due to the poor transportation. The opening of the newly constructed Medog Highway will greatly improve the material supply in the remote areas in Medog County.

Except for the Medog Highway, the government is also planning to invest about 4.3 million CNY into the construction of the first passenger station in Medog County. It is reported that the construction of the Medog County Passenger Station will be started in the end of 2013 and might be put into operation officially in next April at the fastest. According to the director of the Transport Bureau of Medog County, the road condition of the Medog Highway is not good enough for the large-size bus and the 24-seast bus is pretty suitable for running on this highway in consideration of the specific road condition.

Situated at the lower reaches of Yarlung Zangbo River, Medog County is widely noted as a well-preserved ecological zone with low altitude, mild climate and rich rainfall. It only has an average altitude of 1200 meters. Tourists join the Tibet trekking tours to Medog are always impressed by its fascinating natural landscape composed of snow-capped mountains and dense forests. According to the experienced tourists, the road condition in the mountains in Medog County would be even worse in the rainy season and October is the best season for travel to Medog. It is said that October is the transit period of the rainy season to the cold season and it would not be too cold here during that period. Most areas in Medog County might start to snow with the coming of November every year. Anyway, tourists planning to do some trekking activities in Medog are strongly suggested to prepare a cold-proof tent and sleeping cold to cope with the cold after the sunset.
