The direct trains to Lhasa from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing and some other domestic cities were put into operation successively. Though it takes dozens of hours to complete the long train journey to Lhasa, a large quantity of tourists prefer the railway transportation for the price of the train ticket is relatively lower compared to the air tickets. It is reported that there were about 1.1093 million visitors landed on Lhasa by train in the summer season in 2013, and that increased 13.11 percent compared to the same period of 2012.

Qinghai-Tibet Railway has transported around 12.635 million passengers in the past seven years since 2006. There is no doubt that Qinghai-Tibet Railway laid solid foundation for the economy & society development in Tibet Autonomous Region. In the same time, Tibet tourism welcomes its remarkable blowout with the running of the Tibet trains. The opening of the Tibet trains not only provides convenience for tourists from different corners of the world, but also provides great convenience for pilgrims both at home and abroad. Noted as a world famous holy place, Lhasa receives a large number of devout pilgrims every year.

Currently, Lhasa Railway Station is the terminal of Qinghai-Tibet Railway. With an altitude of 3600 meters, Lhasa Railway Station covers a construction area of 23, 600 square meters. Compared to Lhasa Gonggar Airport, Lhasa Railway Station is much closer to the down town (only about 30 kilometers away from the down town). Domestic travelers could get to the down town by bus or taxi easily. As a professional Tibet tour operator, Tibet Tour would always arrange a private vehicle to pick up our foreign clients in the railway station. It is reported that the expanded line of Qinghai-Tibet Railway – Lhasa-Shigatse Railway is under construction and is expected to be put into operation in the near future. Tourists willing to pay a visit to Mt. Everest Base Camp can get to Shigatse by the train directly.

To meet the demand of travelers, Lhasa Railway Station would open more ticket windows in the high season in summer. According to the current policy, the train tickets to and out of Tibet would be open for booking on the official website of Ministry of Railways about 18 days in advance. Foreign tourists need to provide accurate passport information while booking the tickets and valid passport should be provided while withdraw the train ticket from the wickets.
