Tibet Gonggar Airport is located in Gonggar County of Shannan Prefecture, on the southern bank of Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet Autonomous Region. It is the highest civil airport in the world with an altitude of 3600 meters.
After the construction of Tibet Gonggar Airport, there was only one air route: Beijing - Chengdu - Tibet. Now, the number of air routes added to 12, including a national air route: Tibet - Katmandu. There are direct flights between Tibet and Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hongkong, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi'an, Xining, Kunming, Shangri-la.
With the implementation of China's Great Western Development Strategy, the basic facilities of Tibet Gonggar Airport are complementing and optimizing. The government invested 0.3 billion RMB in the expansion of the airport in 2001.
After two years construction, the new Tibet Gonggar Airport put into operation in 2004. 5 A340 plains or 7 Boeing 757 planes could park on the new parking apron at the same time. The old and new terminal building cover an area of 25000 square meters. Tourists could enjoy personalized services in the airport since there are complete service facilities.
