Tibet Festival Calendar – Palden Lhamo Festival

Palden Lhamo Festival would be celebrated on October 15th according to Tibetan calendar. The local Tibetan females take it as their most important day on the Tibet festival calendar. It is also called "fairy maiden festival" by local Tibetans. They would dress on their best and express their wishes to the Palden Lhamo by burning the incenses.

Tibet Festival Calendar – Brief Introduction of Palden Lhamo

All the Buddhists in Muru Monastery would hold a solemn memorial ceremony for the Palden Lhamo in Jokhang Monastery. They would "invite" Palden Lhamo to the Buddha-hall of Sakyamuni and make her face to face with Sakyamuni in the evening of October 14th according to the Tibetan calendar. The Buddhists would head the statue of Palden Lhamo to Barkhor Street early in the morning when the red sun rises from the east. The devout followers of Tibetan Buddhism would present their Hada to her. After a series of religious activities, the Buddhists would send Palden Lhamo back to Jokhang Temple and make her sit at her original place. Then the females would come here to show their respect to the Palden Lhamo and ask for her blessings.

Tibet Festival Calendar – Celebration of Palden Lhamo Festival

According to the Tibet festival calendar, the celebration of Palden Lhamo Festival would be started on October 14th according to the Tibetan calendar. It is said that Palden Lhamo was under s curse created by her mother – she could only meet her husband for just once a year if she finally married her husband. This curse was realized, Palden Lhamo could only meet Sakyamuni on October 15th according to the Tibetan calendar.

With the development of history, the Palden Lhamo Festival has developed to be the few Tibet festivals especially celebrated for the females on Tibet festival calendar. On this day, the males would give some gifts to the females. The Tibetan females would dress up early in the morning and go out on Barkhor Street to experience the festal atmosphere with their friends. They would also go to Jokhang Temple for pilgrimage and would make a wish in front of the Palden Lhamo. The local females hold that make a wish on this day would be very efficacious, especially for the females.

Tourists travel to Tibet during the celebration of the Palden Lhamo Festival would have the chance to witness the devout Tibetans. They always express their respect to their relief with the most devout way. Besides, the dressed-up females on Barkhor Street would also form a beautiful landscape.
