Weather in Nyingchi – the Winter

Update: May 14th, 2012

weather in nyingchi

The winter of Nyingchi is not too cold. It is not so cold as the winter in the northern China nor gloomy and cold in the wet Chengdu. In Tibet, Nyingchi could just be described a little cold. And this cold is just like a hint to tell residence here that the winter is coming. If the nature does not show this hint, people could not feel it is in winter because of the bright shining sun, green mountains and lakes, vibrant prosperity in the villages. This is the lovely weather in Nyingchi. Lovely winter!

The winter in Nyingchi is lovely for the good location. The average altitude of the downstream areas of the Niyang River which are surrounded by mountains is 3000 meters above the sea level. In the southeast, three or four kilometers long ridge sticks out out of Seqila Mountain, like a dinosaur stretching out his neck and drinking water in the Niyang River. The ridge forms a natural cover of defense, avoiding direct impact of strong airflow to Bayi town from Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon. Mountains surrounded are high, abrupt and splendid. in the north, it forms Nyainqentanglha Range, Himalayas in the south, Gangdise Mountains in the west and Hengduan Mountains in the east. Bayi County lies in the arms of the four magnificent mountains.

The winter in Nyingchi is lovely for the bright shining sunshine. In summer, the goddess worries the strong sunshine would scare the green away, it often rains continuously; the sky is filled with cloud and mist. On the contrary, she worries winter’s cold would damage the green, hangs the sun in the sky, wiping away the evening chill. The feature of the weather in Nyingchi is that it is cold in the morning and at night, but warm in the daytime in winter. The coldest time is in January, when the river is covered with a thin coat of ice and it blisters if a pebble is thrown into it. People tried to retain the warmth of sunlight by installing solar water heaters. Warm water flows into thousands of households. With warm weather, various vegetables grow in winter, some of which only grow in spring or autumn in other places, such as cucumber, tomato, green capsicum, eggplant, green bean, and even watermelon.
