Global Warming Influences the Ecological Environment in Tibet

Update: Jan. 4th, 2013

Ecological Environment in Tibet

Glacier thawing, rising waters, rising snowlines and some other symptoms indicated that the Tibet is warming in the background of global warming.

Climate of Tibet Autonomous Region is Greatly Influenced by Global Warming

According to the statistics provided by the meteorological department of Tibet Autonomous Region, the temperature of each season and even the average annual temperature in most of the regions in Tibet keep rising in recent 40 years. The temperature in autumn and winter rises relatively obviously. The temperature of the regions with higher altitude rises more rapid than that of the areas with lower elevation. The annual average temperature of Tibet Plateau rises 0.26? each 10 years and that rate of rise is obviously higher compared to the global warming rate.

In recent 10 years, the extreme climate appeared frequently on Tibet Plateau and the historical temperature record was broke through in a lot of regions. The experts hold that the obvious climatic change is mainly caused by global warming.

Global Warming Obviously Influences the Ecological Environment in Tibet

The climate in various regions in Tibet Autonomous Region changed in different level with the global warming. The climatic change in most of the regions would mainly be seen as temperature -rising, glacier melting and snowline rising. The temperature of Himalaya Regions has rose 1.0? since the 70s of the 20th century, according to the historical record. The temperature of Mt. Everest is on the rise in recent 30 years. The warming of Mt. Everest Area is obviously earlier than the other corner of the world and the warming range here is much larger. The experts said that regions with high elevation are very sensitive in global climatic change and the warming range would be larger with the rising of the altitude.

It is predicted that the glacier area on Tibet Plateau will decrease by 14 to 64 percent till the 50s to 60s of the 21st century if the global warming continues. That means the average glacier area on Tibet Plateau would decrease 38 percent. The shrink of the glacier area will greatly influences the water resources and the development of the husbandry. Recent years, the global warming is also expanding the moraine lakes on Tibet Plateau. The inhabitants at the lower reaches of these lakes are in potential danger of the possible lake breaking on Tibet Plateau.

Meteorological Department of Tibet Cope with the Climatic Change Positively

To cope with the climatic change effectively and retard its influences on the ecological system, agriculture, forestry, water resources and economical development on Tibet Plateau, the Meteorological Department of Tibet Autonomous Region adopted a series of measures. They put the atmospheric monitoring automatic system construction project into effect, improved the existing observation apparatus at the meteorological station, enhanced the modern facilities construction and launched the modern weather service.

At the same time, a series of scientific research projects were carried out to objectively and systematically analyze the influences on the ecological environment in Tibet brought by the climatic change. These projects will also provide reference frame for the scientific decision-making of the government departments.
