The Flourishing Buddhism of Tu Bo Dynasty

Update: Dec. 27th, 2011

Tibet Buddhism

The Buddhism culture has been spread quickly until the Trisong Detsen, the son of Ralpacan, came to power. Trisong Detsen relied on Buddhism to fight ministers who supported the Bon religion.

The Flourishing Buddhism of Tu Bo Dynasty – Padmasambhava

Padmasambhava was a Tantric Buddhist Master who helped to transmit Tantric Buddhism to Tibet during the 8th century, and, according to popular belief, established the first monastery in the region. The followers of the Nyingma School regarded Padmasambhava as the founder of their lineage, and some Buddhists considered Padmasambhava as an incarnation of Amitabha Buddha. There are many legends associated with the life experience of Padmasambhava, and stories about his mystical powers, reflecting a more esoteric side of Buddhism. Padmasambhava is lauded as one of the most important figures in Tibetan religious history.

His fame became known to Trisong Detsen, the 38th king of the Yarlung dynasty, and the first Emperor of Tibet (742–797), whose kingdom was beset by evil mountain deities. The king invited Padmasambhava to Tibet to subdue the evil deities with his tantriic powers. This was in accordance with the tantric principle of not eliminating negative forces but redirecting them to fuel the journey toward spiritual awakening. In Tibet he founded the first monastery in the country, Samye Monastery, initiated the first monks, and introduced the people to the practice of Tantric Buddhism.

The Flourishing Buddhism of Tu Bo Dynasty – Sadnalegs

Sadnalegs, was the youngest son of King Trisong Detsen of Tibet. During the reign of Sadnalegs, Buddhism revived again.

Firstly, Tride Songtsen built a temple which left precious historical records.

Secondly, he invited the local Buddhists to translate the Buddhism scriptures.

Thirdly, he protected the Buddhists and treated them respectfully.

Fourthly, the son of Tride Songtsen became a monk in honor of the Buddhism.

Fifthly, the Buddhists were allowed to participate in government and political affairs.
