Kadam Sect

Update: Dec. 28th, 2011

Kadam Sect

Kadam Sect is one of four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism while the name of Kadam Sect means each significant word of Buddha's is a direction for you.

The most evident teachings of Kadam Sect tradition were the teachings on Bodhicitta (later these special presentations became known as Lojong and Lamrim by Atisha (982-1054)).

Kadam Sect – Origin

In 1042, Atisha was invited by royal family of Guge Dynasty of Ngari Prefecture to promote Buddha dharma in Tibet Region living in Tolin Monastery. In 1045, Dromtonpa invited Atisha to come to Tsang to promote Buddha dharma and later became the disciple of Atisha. In 1056, Dromtonpa was invited to build the Reting Monastery in north of Lhasa, which is the beginning of Kadam Sect.

Kadam Sect – Lineage

After the death of Atisha (1054) his main disciple Lama Dromtonpa organized his transmissions into the legacy known as "the Four Divinities and Three Dharmas", which eventually came to be known as Atisha's Kadam Tradion, the Marvellous Legacy of Seven Divine Dhamas.

Kadam Sect – Branch

There are three main branches of Kadam Sect known as Buddha Dharma Lineage, Instruct Lineage and Buddha Admonishment Lineage.

Buddha Dharma lineage pays attention to learn Buddha dharma of Atisha's deriving by Potowa.

Instruct Lineage is succeeded by Kin'awa, which stresses the learning from teachers and pays attention to practice.

Buddha Admonishment Lineage is succeeded by three disciples of Atisha's, which pays attention to improve self-cultivation.

Since the 15 century, Kadam Sect merged into Gelug Sect of Buddhism as the closely religious doctrines.
