Yigong Lake – Formation

The beautiful scenery of Yigong Lake which can not be made by man did not form in common way. The Yigong Lake formed by a large-scale debris flow at Zhamunong Valley on left bank of Yigong Duobu in 1900. The rolling down debris flow blocked up Yigong Duobu and formed Yigong Lake. After 100 years, there was a landslide in Yigong. The sand and stone which is about 3 kilometers wide blocked up the main course of Yigong Duobu and greatly lifted up the water level of Yigong Lake. At last, the dam of Yigong Lake burst, and Yigong presented new scenes.

Lakes similar with Yigong Lake are commonly seen in Yigong Geopark and southeast of Tibet. There are many lakes in Tibet. But the background and cause of formation of these lakes are different. Many lakes on the wide grassland formed on the basis of large lakes in early period. Later, in the process of plateau uplifting and climate drying, the large lakes gradually shrink and formed several smaller lakes.
