Tang – Bo Ancient Road – Brief Introduction

Tang – Bo Ancient Road is shortened from Tang Dynasty – Tubo Dynasty Ancient Road. It is not only a well known important ancient traffic road in Chinese history, but also the way which must be passed to the Kingdom of Nepal, India, Qinghai Province, and Tibet Region, etc. Tang – Bo Ancient Road is originated from Xian City of Shanxi Province to Lhasa City of Tibet Autonomous Region by way of Gansu and Qinghai. It is approximately 3000 kilometers long. It is also highly praised as the southern route of the Silk Road as it stretches throughout the roof of the world – Tibet and the west part of China. It is significant to connect the southwest part of China, too.

Tang – Bo Ancient Road – History and Culture

Tang – Bo Ancient Road was actually the communication way of Tang Dynasty and Tubo Dynasty in ancient times. It has been built for more than 1300 years. When the famous Princess Wencheng of Tang Dynasty got married with Songtsen Gampo in AD 641, she entered Tibet by way of Tang – Bo Ancient Road. Princess Wencheng brought a lot of artisans, artists, and a large number of silks and satins, ancient books and records, and medical books, etc, to Tibet region. All of which made Tibetans start to know Han people and Tang Dynasty. In the mean time, in order to insure that the safety of Princess Wencheng on the way to Tibet, the Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty ordered his people to construct the roads and bridges, make the boats and build the monasteries along the way. It has been recorded in Chinese history as the first important event between Tang Dynasty and Tubo Dynasty.

Most of the sections of Tang – Bo Ancient Road are available in Qinghai Province. As a matter of fact, the route of G214 National Highway is constructed very similar with Tang – Bo Ancient Road in Qinghai Province.

Tang – Bo Ancient Road witnessed friendly exchanges between Tang Dynasty and Tubo Dynasty. It includes the ancient commercial intercourse and cultural communication, etc. Acted as one of the top 3 important ancient roads of ancient China, it made Tibetan people and Han people knew each other more and more. As of now there are still some villages, ancient monasteries, courier stations, city walls and moats, etc, along Tang – Bo Ancient Road.

In AD 709, the Princess Jincheng of Tang Dynasty got married with Chidai Tsutan – Tibetan Zampo (Zampo is the king of Tibet region). She got into Tibet region by way of Tang – Bo Ancient Road again. Therefore Tang – Bo Ancient Road played a very important role in Chinese history.

After the marriages of Princess Wencheng and Princess Jincheng, the communications of culture, education, technology, religion, and trade, etc, have been established. Tang – Bo Ancient Road became more and more popular and the business along the way developed prosperously.

Tang – Bo Ancient Road – Significance

Tang – Bo Ancient Road is not only the witness of the prosperous commercial intercourse along Tang – Bo Ancient Road in ancient times, but also the evidence of the friendly exchanges between Tang Dynasty and Tubo Dynasty.
