Shenzha Natural Reserve was established in 1993. It is not far from Shenzha County in Nagqu Prefecture. It is praised as the paradise of birds since there are more than 120 species of birds here. It is pretty amazing when thousands of birds flying high together.

Shenzha Natural Reserve has been the most ideal residence for the black-necked crane – a bird under first-class state protection for its superior ecosystem with wet land and water area. Shenzha Natural Reserve has been the largest and highest one among the 7 natural reserves of black-necked cranes in China.

Shenzha Natural Reserve is noted for its magnificent landscape formed by various birds. It is also the largest breeding center of the black-necked cranes. The Gruentso Lake in the reserve covers a water area of 476 square kilometers with an altitude of 4650 meters. The annual precipitation here is about 300 millimeters. Both the glaciers and snow water supply fresh water of Gangdise Mountains for Shenzha Natural Reserve, hence the water here has a low mineral concentration. It is suitable for the growth and reproduction of the aquatic organisms and waterfowls.

Nagqu is an important prefecture of Tibet Autonomous Region and also a vital communication hub along Qingghai-Tibet Railway. It is very convenient to make a visit to Shenzha Natural Reserve from other places in Tibet. There are buses opened between Nagqu and Lhasa.
