Brief Introduction of Rela Yumdrolin Monastery

The Rela Yumdrolin Monastery is one of the monasteries of Tibetan Bon Religion. It was built in the 7th century during Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in power. It was destroyed in 8th century during Tibetan King Langdarma in power. In the fourteen Raojiong Horse Year in Tibetan Calendar (in 1834), the Darwa Jianzang of Bon Religion got the permission of tenth Dalai Lama and eighth Pachen Lama and Prince Regent Darcha Danbaigongbu to repair the monastery. Construction of Rela Yumdrolin Monastery

In 1959, Rela Yumdrolin Monastery was listed as monastery under state important protection. At that time, there were one large scripture hall, 5 palace halls, 7 Khangcuns and over 500 Bon Religion disciples in Rela Yumdrolin Monastery. The Dukhang Hall is the main construction of Rela Yumdroling Monastery. In the hall, there are 64 pillars. The hall is the main place for holding religious activities. The left side and right side of the hall separately are Ganzhu Lakhang and Danzhu Lakhang. The front side of the hall is Assembly Hall. In front of the Assembly Hall, there is a temple with 29 pillars. Go up the stairs from Dukhang Hall, there is a circular long corridor. Except for temples, there are practice room for monks, store house for preserving religious articles and room for enshrining ancient scripture versions on the four sides of the circular long corridor.

Legend about Rela Yumdrolin Monastery

There are various legends about the formation of Rela Yumdrolin Monastery. As early as 3000 years ago, Renzeng Chenbalangka (he was called the father of Lianhuaji in Bon Religion) ever predicted that a big monastery of Bon Religion will appear in Tibet, and the conqueror Tuo Mei (later named Jianggun Darwa Jianzan) from Langwa (present Aba area in Sichuan Province) will built a monastery there. Tibetan King Trison Detsen ever carried out the activities of "destroying Bon Religion" to promote the development of Buddhism when he invited Padmasambhava to preach Buddhism. The Padmasambhava ever predicted that the Bon Religion would revive there. About 400 years before the Yumdrolin Monastery built, the founder of Manri Monastery, Nianmei Raojianzan ever predicted that a large monastery of Bon Religion will appear in Rela. Jianggun Darwa Jianzan directed the building of the largest monastery of Bon Religion - Yumdrolin Monastery on a platform which formed by cobblestones in Rela Village.

Activities in Rela Yumdrolin Monastery

The daily religious activities in Rela Yumdrolin Monastery include sacrifice, driving off evil spirits, meditation, sermon, etc. But the most important activity in Rela Yumdrolin Monastery is the debating activity of religious doctrines. Now, there are 65 monks in Rela Yumdrolin Monastery. There are debating activities from January 7th to January 15th, in April, on May 29th and in August. Through the way of debating, monks can get the academic degree of "Zhongrangba". The Rela Yumdrolin Monastery plays an important role in Bon Religion. The Kampo in each monastery of Bon Religion must be appointed by Rela Yumdrolin Monastery.
