Qyangtang Grassland

Qyangtang literally means the northern highland in Tibetan language. It is over 5000 meters high, which is located in the highest geography location of China. Qyangtang Grassland is also called "the top of the roof of the world". There are full of beautiful lakes in different shapes in Qyangtang Grassland, which the lake is one of the most beautiful attractions in Qyangtang Grassland. The lakes cover an area over 25000 square kilometers in total and ranks 25% of the coverage of the lakes in China. Therefore Qyangtang grassland is also regarded as the plateau lake which renowned for the highest location of the world and the most lakes in the area.

Qyangtang Grassland – Transportation

Drive about 99 kilometers in north from Lhasa city along Qinghai-Tibet highway, and then pass the Yangpachen geothermal power station, you can easily find Nyenchen Tanglha. Qyangtang Grassland is located in the north part of Nyenchen Tanglha.

Qyangtang Grassland – Highlights

Qyangtang is one of the top 5 pastures of China. It is located between Kunlun Mountain Range and Mt. Kailash. It is not only the heaven of wild flora and fauna's, but also the cultural area with profound and age-old history. There are full of strong yaks and sheep, and Tibetan tents on the grassland. The generations of the herdsman live in this area and create the unique nomadic culture. Not far away there are the ruins of Shangxong Kingdom, lots of amazing cliff paintings, the Manidui, the prayer flags and the ancient tower, etc. The famous ancient road of Tang Dynasty and Tubo Dynasty is throughout Qyangtang Grassland.

Qyangtang Grassland – Ngari Prefecture

Ngari Prefecture is the best representative of Qyangtang Grassland. Ngari literally means the black river in Tibetan language. The black river is available in the upper reaches of Nu River. As the water is a little black, local people call it Black River. The black river is the major source of water of Qyangtang Grassland. There are full of abundant resource of glaciers, river, lakes, waters, hot springs, and terrestrial heat resource.

Qyangtang Grassland - Terrestrial Heat and Hot Spring

Even though it is frozen in 8-9 months in a year in Qyangtang Grassland, the high and cold area, there are still full of abundant terrestrial heat and hot spring resource. In Ngari town, people wear a fur-lined jacket in a whole year. When people take a shower, they would like to go for the hot spring, only about 4 kilometers away from the town. The water temperature is about 60-70°.

More than 300 terrestrial heat resources in northern grassland have been explored, which occupies approximate 2/3 of the total number in Tibet region. Besides, there are some thermal springs, boiling springs, fumaroles, smoking holes, and saline springs, etc.

Qyangtang Grassland – Tibetan Tents

The Tibetan tents in different color in the Qyangtang Grassland are also the beautiful scenery. The unique Tibetan nomadic culture is comprised of the yaks, Tibetan tents, and herdsmen.

Qyangtang Grassland – National Clothes

During the festivals and important events in Qyangtang grassland such as horse racing, local people will dress the most beautiful and expensive clothes. The women usually dress the gorgeous Tibetan robe, and lots of decorations on head, neck, wrist and waist. The men usually ride a horse and show their manliness with the race, shooting, etc.
