Paga Monastery – Brief Introduction

The altitude of Paga Monastery is 5000 meters. In the Paga Monastery, there are over 1000 large and small Buddha status and about 100 monks. The Paga Monastery was built in the end period of fifth Dalai. The Paga Monastery belongs to Gelug Sect. But the Paga Monastery is under the rule of Ganden Monastery. There are two soul pagodas in the Paga Monastery. One of the two soul pagodas is used to place the clothes, hats and shoes of the first master of Gandan Monastery – Master Tsongkapa.

Paga Monastery – Nearby Sight Spots

The Paga Holy Mountain, behind of Paga Monastery, is very famous in Gongbu Area. The shape of Paga Holy Mountain looks like Duoji Pamu Goddess. Especially the cave at belly part of the Duoji Pamu Goddess on the mountain waist is very efficacious. This cave is named "Fairy Cave". It attracts over ten thousands believers come here to worship. There are two mounds of Mani stones at the entrance of "Fairy Cave". The "Fairy Cave" is very large. There is small cave connecting with large cave, extending upward. There is a scuttle on top of the cave. In the scuttle, there are various ram's horns carved with Sutra of Six Truest Words (Om Mani Padme Hum) which were brought there by believers from everywhere in the world. In addition, prayer flags are fluttering in the wind. The whole cave is full of solemn atmosphere. The interior sides of the "Fairy Cave" are carved with patterns and nameless words. In the cave, there are iron chains for tourists to climb.

The scuttle on top of the cave is named "the eye leading to heaven". When sunlight refracts in the cave, you may heard the sound of wind and water. In the terms of construction, the Fairy Cave is a cave with small caves in large caves and large caves in small caves. The part under the cave is "mouth of Duoji Pamu". There is a water tunnel and geyser under the Navel Cave. One of them is named Duoji Pamu Cave by local people. The geyser will spurt water every four hours, six times in one day.

On the slope under Paga Monastery, there is a famous platform for celestial burial. The celestial burial is one of special Tibetan custom. Around the platform for celestial burial, there are flying prayer flags and numberless vultures standing on the cliff. In the point of people of Paga, death is a kind of explanation of life. It is charity to feed vultures with corpse. Then, the soul can be brought to heaven by vultures. In this way, death is a kind of rebirth.

In suburb of Paga Monastery, there are three lakes in the color blue, green and white separately. The area of these lakes separately is 100mu, 50mu and 3mu. These three lakes are with different scenery. They add more highlights to Paga Monastery.
