Namjagbarwa Peak

Namjagbarwa Peak is the highest mountain in Nyingchi Prefecture, Tibet. It ranks 16th among the highest mountains above the sea level with an elevation of 7782 meters. It also called Shy Lady Peak for its top is covered with white snow and is surrounded by clouds and mists all year around.

Namjagbarwa Peak – Nature Museum

Namjagbarwa Area is a precious Nature Museum. It spans from the tropical zone to the frigid zone. The southern slope of Namjagbarwa Peak, with an elevation lower than 1100 meters, enjoys a warm and rainy climate. The evergreen rainforest composed of kapur, shorea assamica and some other plants is located at the lower slop with an elevation under 500 meters. Various typical tropical plants grow in the dark and humid tropical rainforest, such as the sugar palm and some other rattan plants.

The area with an altitude between 2400-2800 meters at the southern slope of Namjagbarwa Peak is the warm temperate zone. The hemlock trees, with a height of more than 80 meters and a diameter of 2-3 meters, are the main plants in this region. The area with an altitude of more than 4000 meters is the frigid bush fallow & meadow zone of the southern slope of Namjagbarwa Peak. The colorful wild flowers composed the main landscape, including the azalea, androsace umbellate, potentilla chinensis, anemone and so on. The varied elevation and natural belts provide suitable environment for the growth of various plants. Namjagbarwa Peak attracts a large number of scientists for its rich plant resources.

Namjagbarwa Peak – Transportation and Mountaineering History

Most of the tourists planning to visit Namjagbarwa Peak would like to start from Lhasa, where is about 410 kilometers away from Bayi Town, Nyingchi. Then drive southward to Milin County along Niyang River, about 75 kilometers. The Base Camp of Namjagbarwa Peak enjoys an elevation of 3512 meters. Tourists and mountaineers should note that there is still a long distance between Milin and the Base Camp. Besides, the road condition is quite limited due to the severe natural environment.

Namjagbarwa Peak was not conquered by human beings till October 30th, 1992. On that day, the Sino-Japanese Joint Mountaineering Expedition reached to the top of Namjagbarwa Peak successfully. It is quite difficult to conquer Namjagbarwa Peak since it is pretty steep and the natural disasters (earthquakes and snowslide) happened frequently.
