Mt.Chogori

Mt. Chogori is the second highest peak above the sea level with an altitude of 8611 meters. It is the main peak of Karakoram Mountains and also noted as Mt. K2. It is located on the border between China (Kargilik County in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) and Pakistan.

Mt. Chogori – Brief Introduction

Karakoram Mountains stretches thousands of miles from the northwest to the southeast. A series of high peaks located here except for Mt. Chogori, including the Faichan Kangri (Broad Peak, with an altitude of 8051 meters) and Mt. Gunung Belumut (with an altitude of 8068 meters). Mt. Chogori has been recognized as the one of the most challengeable mountains above the sea level.

Regarding the name origin of Mt. Chogori, there are different statements. Generally, Chogori is regarded as Tajik which means magnificent. The others hold that Chogori means white goddess in Tibetan. It is recorded that the descendant of ancient Tibetans inhabited in the southern slope of Mt. Chogori. Currently, the international mountaineering community calls it Mt. K2, in which the K represents the Karakoram Mountains.

Mt. Chogori Area not only has a perilous topography but also enjoys a severe climate. The period between May and September is the rainy season of this area while the period between September and mid April of the coming year is its severe cold winter. The extremely low temperature at the peak of Mt. Chogori reaches -50? and the wind speed even reaches 5 meters per second. It is really a forbidden zone even for the most professional mountaineers in the world.

The water in the river would rise rapidly between May and September due to the snow melting caused by the increasing temperature. It is very difficult to enter into Mt. Chogori. The period between May and June is regarded as the best season to do some mountaineer activities at Mt. Chogori. The temperature would be relatively higher and the weather is better between July and September compared to other seasons. It is the best time to get to the top of Mt. Chogori.

Mt. Chogori – Mountaineering History

Mt. Chogori was first conquered by an Italian mountaineering team guided by Ardito Dissyo on July 31st, 1954.

In 1982, a Japanese mountaineering team conquered Mt. Chogori along the northern slope in China.

In 2004, Chinese mountaineering team firstly get to the top of Mt. Chogori successfully on July 27th in 2004.

A Chinese civil mountaineering team conquered Mt. Chogori on July 30th, 2012.
