Gyatsa Gorge, similar to Cho Ming Valley in movie 2012

Update: Feb. 7th, 2012

Jiacha Gorge

Gyatsa Gorge stretches more than 100 kilometers. It is a relatively narrow section on middle reaches of Yarlung Zangbo River. The entrance of the gorge is located in Zangmu County, about 5 kilometers away from the county seat of Gyatsa County. The entrance is pretty wide and there is a magnificent natural landscape composed of farmland, giant rocks, bush and naked land. Gyatsa Gorge is also noted for its waterfalls because of its special geographical location.

The soil of Gyatsa Gorge is pretty dry and there are many shoals in the river. Desertification will happen in the dry Gyatsa Gorge in autumn and winter every year.

Gyatsa Gorge looks almost the same as Cho Ming Valley in movie 2012. The Z-shaped path hanging on the cliff vertically is only about 30 centimeters wide. The roaring water in Yarlung Zangbo River rushes passionately under the cliff. It seems the endless snow-covered mountains are very near.

Most parts of Gyatsa Gorge will be submerged in 2012 since there is a giant hydropower station under construction. The Dam of Zangmu Hydropower Station in Gyatsa Gorge has been folded. It will start the water impoundment in the near future. This hydropower station will be the largest hydropower station on Yarlung Zangbo River. It was designed to produce more electricity than the total output of the other stations in Tibet.

Gyatsa Gorge is desolate and uninhabited. All the necessities have to be backpacked by human beings since there is no flat path in the gorge. The communication with people out of the gorge is unavailable since there is no signal in the gorge.

Gyatsa County enjoys a semi-arid sub-humid climate. The topography here is higher in the west and lower in the east. There are many rivers and gorges among the primitive forests, among which Gyatsa Gorge is one of the most dangerous one. The Yajiang River in Gyatsa Gorge is only 10 meters wide at its narrowest.

Gyatsa Gorge is of rich natural resources because of the ecological environment. There are many types of rare and valuable wild animals and plants. A large number of local Tibetans in Gyatsa County would adopt cordyceps and herbs for living.
