Ancient Tea-horse Road

Ancient Tea-horse Road is a folk international trade channel in southwest China. It acted as the trade link between Yunnan Province and Tibet, India and Burma thousand years ago. It has been a gold tourism route with the most magnificent natural landscape and most mysterious culture in the world. There are unlimited cultural relics contained in Ancient Tea-horse Road.

Ancient Tea-horse Road – Brief Introduction

Ancient Tea-horse Road was developed in Tang Dynasty and thrived in Ming and Qing dynasties. It reached its heyday in middle and late Second World War. Ancient Tea-horse Road has three main routes: the Qinghai-Tibet Route, Yunnan-Tibet Route and Sichuan-Tibet Route.

The Qinghai-Tibet Route was developed in Tang Dynasty; it is the oldest route of Ancient Tea-horse Road. Sichuan-Tibet Route has far reaching influence and is the most important route of Ancient Tea-horse Road in history.

The three routes of Ancient Tea-horse Road have close relationship with Qamdo Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region. The Yunnan-Tibet Route and Sichuan-Tibet Road pass through Qamdo Prefecture. The development of the three routes greatly related to the trade of Ancient Tea-horse Road.

Ancient Tea-horse Road – Routes

Ancient Tea-horse Road has three routes: Qinghai-Tibet Route (the route was the main communication path between Tang Dynasty and Tubo Kingdom), Yunnan-Tibet Route and Sichuan-Tibet Route.

Yunnan-Tibet Route of Ancient Tea-horse Road was developed in Tang Dynasty. It is closely related to the expansion and trade activity of Tubo Kingdom. Tubo Kingdom established specialized departments to rule the trade of the Ancient Tea-horse Road.

Sichuan-Tibet Route of Ancient Tea-horse Road was an international trade route. It stretched from Yaan in Sichuan Province to Lhasa in Tibet, and extended to Buhutan, Nepal, and India. It totally stretched about 4000 kilometers and has a history of more than 1300 years.

Ancient Tea-horse Road – Historical Influence

Ancient Tea-horse Road is of great significance in the development of politics and economic in the history of China. Necessaries of life, such as tea and some other productions produced in central China were transmitted to Tibet through the Ancient Tea-horse Road. At the same time, the relatively enclosed Tibet opened. A large quantity of local specialties and handicrafts were transmitted to central China through the Ancient Tea-horse Road.

The Ancient Tea-horse Road promoted the formation of the complementary relationship between central China and Tibet and the reunification of China, as well as the solidarity of Han nationality and Tibetan. In history, Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty didn't station any troops in Tibet, but Tibetan has been an inalienable territory of them greatly due to the existence of the Ancient Tea-horse Road.

The Ancient Tea-horse Road spurred the development of the towns and cities in Tibet. Take Qamdo as an example, it was the transportation hub and distribution center of the tree routes of the Ancient Tea-horse Road. With the development of the tea-horse trade, Qamdo has been an important trade center in Kham Area.
