Tibetan Fresco

In the long history, Tibetan Fresco constantly absorbing from other kinds of paintings and adding the marrows to itself, becoming a unique art form which is various in content and form. For example, it includes history stories, famous figures, folk legends, religious myths and other contents. It is one wonderful work of Tibetan traditional art, also treasure in world painting art.

Fresco is a very common painting form which is painted on the wall, hence the name. The subject usually religion, like jinn, fairies, religious stories and so on. You can see fresco in monastery, temple, palace, private residence, dak and every kind of serai. Sometimes people paint in outdoor. The ceiling in monastery is the place where usually used to paint fresco. Once in a while, it also painted on the beam column of scripture hall.

Fresco is similar to Thangka in content and performance skill method. The contents of them are various, including historical events, biography, religious doctrine, Tibetan customs, folk legends, fairy stories and so on; involving political, economy, history, religion, culture, social life and other aspects. It can be called visual encyclopedia. These exquisite artworks are the epics of Tibetan culture. It can be divided into several kinds base on its content.

Tibetan Fresco – Religious Painting

Religious paintings include the figure paintings of Buddha, Bodhisattva, yacute, heavenly maiden, Buddha of esoteric Buddhism, guardian of Buddhism and so on. Religious paintings also include the scenes of argue-iatric, sorcerer's dance in a trance, propagate the Dharma, and transmit scriptures and other religious activities. Some of the paintings vividly showed the abstract meaning of "comeuppance", "metempsychosis", propagated" paradise and hell","hard life". It is useful to propagate and anaesthetize.

Tibetan Fresco – Biography Paintings

It includes the pictures which express the life of Sakyamuni, master biography (Pasmasambhava, Attisha), chos-rgyal biography (Pagba, Razhba, Tsongkhapa, the fifth Dalai) and others. These frescos commonly use tens or hundreds serial pictures to show the life story of the person. For example, there is a pedigree chart in White Temple, the site of the Guge Kingdom, which generalized the development of the kingdom.
