Health Protection Knowledge for Tour to Tibet

Tibet Plateau

Tibet Autonomous Region has an average altitude of 4200 meters. The air pressure is pretty low and the oxygen content in the air is only about 70 percent. The sunshine here lasts long and is pretty strong. It has a long and cold winter. It is especially dry in winter and spring. The climate in Tibet changes obviously and there is a big temperature difference between day and night.

Most of the tourists have different degrees of altitude sickness when they firstly arrive in Tibet. The altitude sickness has various symptoms, including headache, short of breath, nausea, vomiting and insomnia. Generally, these symptoms would disappear in two or three days after you adapt to the plateau environment. During the adjustment period, you should not do some violent activities; appropriate clothes should be worn so as to prevent yourself from the cold.

Altitude sickness is a normal phenomenon which you don't need to be scared of. You should adjust yourself to the best health condition before entering Tibet. You should sleep enough and move slowly after you getting off the plane in Tibet. You should also drink much water and stop smoking.

The following are some tips for health protection in Tibet:

Heavy stuffs should not be lifted and deep breath should be made. Medicines such as tranquilizer and aminophylline could be taken according to the doctor's advice.

Take water soaked ginseng or keep it in the mouth is helpful to ease the plateau symptoms as well.

If you are extremely short of oxygen, then you should breathe through the oxygen bag (available at hotels and hospitals).

If you catch a cold, you should have it cured in time so that it will not deteriorate to pulmonary emphysema.

When go out, sunglass and hat should be worn and sun-proof oil should be used so as to avoid being scorched by sunshine.

Food should not be overtaken when firstly come. Vegetables, fruits and water should be largely taken in and smoking and drinking should be avoided.
