Shigatse

Shigatse is located at the confluence of Nianchu River (main tributary of Yarlung Zangbo River) and Yarlung Zangbo River in southeastern Tibet. It covers an area of 3875 square kilometers and is about 3836 meters above the sea level. Shigatse means fertile manor in Tibetan. It is an ancient city with a history of more than 600 years. It was listed as a state historical and cultural city in 1986. Shigatse acted as the political, religious and cultural center of Shigatse Prefecture. The Panchen Lamas also lived in Shigatse. Shigatse is also one of the must-visit places during your Tibet Tour.

Shigatse – Natural Environment

Shigatse is the second largest city in Tibet. There are beautiful natural landscapes and was praised as a fertile and nice manor.

Shigatse is located in the river valley. The average temperature is about 2?-12? in the coldest month and the average temperature is about 10?-18? in the warmest month. The annual average temperature is 6.3 ?. It is not very cold in winter and not very hot in summer. The precipitation is mainly concentrated in July and August.

Shigatse is enjoys a temperate climate with sufficient sunshine. The tourism facilities here is rather complete and tourists could here for sightseeing at any season of the year. If you want to climb the Qomolangma Peak (Mt. Everest) for exploration, you are not advised to come here between October and April of the next year since it is very cold in these months. If you want to appreciate Mt. Everest you are not advised to come here in July and August since they are thought to be the rainy season. The best season to appreciate Mt. Everest is between April and June.

Shigatse – Natural Landscapes and Historical Sites

Shigatse is noted for its amazing natural landscapes and rich cultural sites. The worldly famous Mt. Everest is located in Shigatse Prefecture. There are also beautiful primitive forests, holy lakes and mountains, grasslands and mysterious monasteries. The special and local traditions of Shigatse Prefecture are also attractive for tourists. Tourists could learn the history and culture of Tibet while they enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes and ancient cultural sites in Shigatse.

There is one of the three sacred lakes of Tibet – Yamdrok Lake lies among mountains. Tashilhunpo Monastery is a landmark of Shigatse. It was built against the hill and looked pretty magnificent. Some of the tourists praised that Tashilhunpo Monastery is as beautiful as Potala Palace. It is the residence of the Panchens. Palkor Monastery in Gyangtse County is noted for its pagodas and murals. It is also one of the religious centers of Tibet.

Shigatse – Tourism

The transportation in Shigatse is very convenient, especially the expressway communication. Heading further toward the south from Shigatse, tourists could arrive at the foot of Mt. Everest. Tourists could also leave Shigatse for Nagqu Prefecture to the north, Ngari Prefecture to the west, Lhasa and Shannan Prefecture to the east.

The annual festivals celebrated in the monasteries and the special Tibet opera enjoy a good reputation among tourists both at home and abroad. Shigatse has been one of the most attractive sites for tourists came to Tibet for its ancient culture, magnificent architectures, amazing natural landscapes and advantageous geological location.
