Shetongmen County in Tibet – Brief Introduction

Shetongmen County is located in the northwest part of Shigatse Prefecture and the north bank of Yarlung Zangbo River. In the east, it adjoins Mulin County and Shigatse Prefecture. In the north, it adjoins Shenzha County of Ngari Prefecture. In the west, it adjoins Angren County. In the south, it adjoins Sakya County and Latse County. It is situated at the eastern longitude 87°4′-89°1′ and northern latitude 29°18′-30°26′. The county center is approximately 83 kilometers far from the center of Shigatse Prefecture. In Tibetan language, Shetongmen literally means smile. It was named as padmasambhava feel satisfied and smiled when he came to Shetongmen County.

Shetongmen County in Tibet – Geography

The terrain of Shetongmen County is mainly higher in the north but lower in the south. It is characteristic of the plateau hill landform.

1.The northern plateau: it stretches from the north to the south of the Gangdisê Mountain. The northern plateau of Shetongmen County is about 80 kilometers in width and about 100 kilometers long. It accounts for 2/3 of the number of the acreage of Shetongmen County.

2.The southern valley area: it is located in the northern bank of Yarlung Zangbo River. There are also some valley flats available in the areas of the branches of Yarlung Zangbo River, such as Rong River valley flat, Jianggong River valley flat, and Tang River valley flat, etc. The valley flat is about 4-7 kilometers in width and about 40 kilometers long. The average elevation is about 4100 meters high. The terrain is very flat and the soil texture is very fertile. The climate is characteristic of the semi-humid feature. There is rich in the water resource in the southern valley areas of Shetongmen County, too.

3.The western plateau: There are full of deep valleys and high mountains in the western plateau in Shetongmen County in Tibet. Most of the high mountains stretch from the south to the north. The average elevation is over 4500 meters high. The climate is dry and cold.

Shetongmen County in Tibet – Attractions

Xuela Pugangri Peak

Xuela Pugangri Peak is about 6310 meters high and it is one of the peaks of Gangdisê Mountains. It is available in Shetongmen County and located in the north part of Shetongmen County. It is covered with the snow all year round. There is a natural pasture in the piedmont of Xuela Pugangri Peak.

Rivers

Some large rivers of Shetongmen County are Zangbo River, Ronghe River, Danapu River, Nyangre River, Jianggong River and Meijiubu River, etc. They cover an area of 9500 square kilometers. Besides, there are many small seasonal rivers, too.

Lakes

There are full of lakes in Shetongmen County in Tibet. The larger lakes are Libuditso Lake, Langbonxong Lake, Gyare Lake and Chedo Lake.

Libuditso Lake is about 4600 meters high and covers an area of 2.6 square kilometers. There are full of fish in the lake. It is supplied by the rain and snow water.

Gyare Lake is about 4550 meters high and covers an area of 1.5 square kilometers. It is supplied by the rain, snow water and ice water.

Chedo Lake is a seasonal lake. It is about 4300 meters high and covers an area of 1.3 square kilometers.

Shetongmen County in Tibet – Climate

The north part of Shetongmen County is cold and dry. The south part and the west part are both semi-warm and semi-humid. The duration of sunshine is long and the solar radiation is very strong. The temperature is relatively lower and the daily temperature difference is large. The average temperature is about 6.35 ?. In January, the average temperature is about -8?. In July, the average temperature is about 15 ?. The highest temperature is about 27.6 ?.
