Sangri County

Sangri County is located in Shannan Prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region. In Tibetan language, Sangri literally means the "Copper Mountain". It lies in the south part of Gangdisê Mountains and the valley area of the middle part of Yarlung Zangbo River. Sangri County is approximately 230 kilometers far from Lhasa City. It covers an area of 2638 square kilometers. Due to the good geographic location, the transportation is very convenient in Sangri County.

Sangri County in Tibet – Geography

Sangri County has been divided into two parts by Yarlung Zangbo River. The south part is surrounded by the Himalaya Mountains, and the north part is surrounded by the Gangdisê Mountains. The terrain of the valley is gradually higher in the south and in the north along the Yarlung Zangbo River. The highest elevation is over 5000 meters and the lowest elevation is about 3400 meters. The average elevation is approximately 4000 meters high. There are full of plateau lakes in different shapes in the north high grasslands. In the south part, there are full of mountain lands in different height.

Sangri County in Tibet – Climate

Sangri County is located in the plateau temperature arid monsoon climate zone. There is a lot of rainfall which mainly happens at night. There is full of sunshine and the duration of sunshine lasts about 2770 hours. The temperature difference in day and night is obviously large. The frostless period in the valley is about 150-180 days. In the mountain lands and grasslands, it only lasts 60 days. The annual average precipitation is about 420 mm. The average temperature is about 8 ?.

Sangri County in Tibet – Water Power Resource

Sangri County is regarded as the energy base of Tibet. The storage capacity of the water resource is 100000 kilowatt. The runoff depth is about 240-500mm. There are more water resources in the north but less in the south. The water energy includes Yarlung Zangbo River, Woka River, Biba River, and Qyusong River. The large hydropower stations of Tibet were established in Sangri County.

Sangri County in Tibet – Medical Materials and Wild Animals

There are full of medical materials' resource and wild animals' resource. The wild animals include snow leopard, red deer, white-lipped deer, snow cock, black bear, woof, roe deer, monkey, pheasant, Mongolian gazelle and hare, etc.

The medical materials include Chinese caterpillar fungus, Snow Lotus Herb, musk, Fritillaria, Coptis chinensis, radix bupleuri and Rhodiola rosea, etc.

Sangri County in Tibet – Attractions

There are full of sacred mountains, holy lakes, hot springs, monasteries and ancient buildings everywhere in Sangri County in Tibet. The famous attractions in Sangri County are Wodegongye Snow Mountain – the highest peak in Sangri County, 6300m, Dewoka Hot Spring - Dalai Lama usually visited here, Qulong Monastery – the sermon monastery where Tsongkhapa master taught, Yarlung Zangbo River Waterfall, alpine plant scenic spot and Dansati Monastery, etc. Tsongkhapa master was the great founder of Gelug Sect and highly respected by Tibetan people. The 1st Dalai Lama and the 1st Panchen Lama were both his disciples. The wonderful natural sceneries and the mysterious cultural relics are both worthy for tourists to visit.
