Qamdo Town

Qamdo Town is the entrance of Tibet for tourists from Sichuan, Yunnan and Qinghai provinces. It is the political, economic, and cultural center of Qamdo Prefecture. It is 3306 meters above the sea level with an area of 4.5 square kilometers. Qamdo means the confluence of rivers in Tibetan. Qamdo Town is of rich historical and cultural relics. It has been an important attraction for Tibet tours.

Qamdo Prefecture - Geographical Location

Qamdo Prefecture is located in the river basin of Jinsha River, Lancang River and Salween River in eastern Tibet. It covers an area of about 0.1086 million square kilometers with an average elevation of over 3500 meters. It is about 445 kilometers wide from the south to the north and 527 kilometers long from the east to the west.

Qamdo Prefecture faces Sichuan Province to the east, borders Yunnan Province and Burma in the southeast, borders Nyingchi Prefecture in southwest, borders Nagqu Prefecture in northwest and borders Qinghai Province in the north. It is the east entrance of Tibet Autonomous Region.

Qamdo Prefecture administrates 11 counties, 10 towns and 159 villages. It has a population of about 0.57 million. 21 nationalities inhabit here, including Tibetan, Han, Hui and so on. The ethnical groups take 98 percent of the population here.

Qamdo Prefecture - Climate

Qamdo Prefecture enjoys various climates. It is cold and dry in the northwestern and northern parts of Qamdo Prefecture. The climate here is also characterized by long sunshine duration, strong radiation, and big temperature difference between day and night. It rains often in summer nights and winds often in winter and spring.

The annual average temperature in Qamdo is about 7.6? and the annual precipitation is 400-600 millimeters. It has 80-127 frost-free days. Qamdo Prefecture enjoys a stereoscopic climate for its sophisticated terrain with high mountains and deep valleys. There is an old saying describes the climate characteristic of Qamdo Prefecture goes that "you could enjoy landscapes of the four seasons from the foot to the top of the mountain because of the vertical weather changes". Qamdo Town is the least air-polluted city in China and also an ideal summer resort.

Qamdo Prefecture - Tourism

Qamdo Town is an important tourism town of eastern Tibet. Its sophisticated terrain, towering mountains and ancient rivers made Qamdo more attractive to tourists. Qamdo Town is noted for its long history, ancient culture devout religion. The numerous monasteries present particular cultural landscapes.

Qamdo Town keeps attracting an increasing number of tourists here for sightseeing, science research and exploration recent years.
