Bayi Town

Bayi Town is located in Nyingchi Prefecture, Tibet. It is the political, economic and cultural center of Nyingchi Prefecture. It lies on Nyang River and is about 2900 meters above the sea level. It is about 30 kilometers away from the confluence of Yarlung Zangbo River and Nyang River.

Bayi Town - Brief Introduction

Bayi Town was named Lharigar before the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951. After the People's Liberation Army stationed here, Lharigar was changed to Bayi Town. It was almost a wasteland with few villages before 1960. People there put great efforts in the reclaiming of Bayi Town. And now it has developed into a newly town.

The administration office of Nyingchi Prefecture is located in Bayi Town. Bayi has a population of 35000 and an urban construction area of 5 square kilometers. The terrain here is pretty flat. It enjoys a moderate climate with abundant rainfall.

Bayi Town - Economic

As a collection and distribution center of southeastern Tibet, Bayi Town develops well in business. A large quantity of goods are transmitted here from Lhasa, Chengdu or even Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. The handicrafts and some other products around Bayi Town are also be distributed to other parts of China here.

Bayi Town acted as an important transportation hub of Tibet. It connected the eastern part, western part and southern part of Tibet. It has been developed into a newly town with complete facilities and well developed industries. Its major industries include paper printing, wool waving, construction material, farming machine, wood and food processing.

Bayi Town - Tourism Resource

With beautiful natural landscapes, Bayi Town has a lot of famous scenic spots. The Summer Waterfall and Winter Icefall, Lake Riggemu Co, and the Giant Cypress Forest keep attracting a lot of tourists here for sightseeing.

There is a famous white mulberry in Pangna Village, about 40 kilometers away from Bayi Town seat. It is said that this white mulberry was planted by Songtsen Gambo and Princess Wencheng of Chinese Tang Dynasty. It is 7.04 meters high and could be dated back to 1600 years ago. Hence, it was praised as "king of white mulberries".

The famous Giant Cypress Forest is located in Pagge Village, about 10 kilometers away from the Bayi County seat. It covers an area of 10 hectares. There are numerous precious Tibetan giant cypress trees in the forest. The "king of giant cypress trees" in the forest is over 50 meters high and could be dated back to 2500 years ago.
