Baqing County in Tibet

Baqing

Baqing County is located in the upper reach of Nu River, the east part of Ngari Prefecture and the northeast part of Tibet Autonomous Region. It covers an area of 10326 square kilometers. In Tibetan language, Baqing literally means the tent. In Tubo Dynasty, it was named Songbi Dongpuqyong. In Yuan Dynasty, it was governed by the King Hor. In Ming Dynasty, it was managed by Sichuan Province. In Qing Dynasty, it was one of the 39 tribes in Tibet and managed by local government in Tibet Region. After the revolution, Baqing County was managed by Qamdo Prefecture. In 1960 it was managed by Ngari Prefecture.

Baqing County in Tibet – Climate

Baqing County belongs to the plateau subtropical semi-humid monsoon climate zone. It is lack of oxygen in the highland and the air is very thin. The frostless period is short. There is lots of torrential rain and strong wind in Baqing County. The duration of sunshine is about 2400 hours. The annual precipitation is about 500-600mm.

Baqing County in Tibet – Geography

Baqing County is situated in the lake basin of southern Qyangtang of northern Tibet. The terrain is higher in the north but lower in the south. The average elevation is over 4500 meters high. There are many high mountain peaks in Baqing County such as Bugya Mountain, Warla Mountain, Zhulo Mountain, Canglai Mountain, Qyurula Mountain, and Wurgaola Mountain. The oxygen is less in the plateau and the air is thin. It is cold in winter and it is cool in summer. The solar radiation is very strong and the duration of the sunshine is very long. The annual temperature difference is relatively larger.

Baqing County in Tibet – Resource

The mineral resource of Baqing County includes the coal, iron, and aluminum, etc. The fauna and flora resource includes Chinese caterpillar fungus, fritillaria, rhizoma anemarrhenae, rheum officinale, and rhizoma coptidis, etc. The wild animal resource includes antelope, blue sheep, plateau rabbit, fox, bear, and wolf, etc.

In addition, the natural resource and good environment are both good for the animal husbandry of Baqing County. There are a lot of rivers and rainfall. People there mainly feed yak, horse, sheep, and goat.

Baqing County in Tibet – Transportation

There were not any highways or roads in Baqing County in Tibet before the reform measures published. People usually walk here and there, or just ride a horse, or cattle. In recent 40 years, the traffic condition of Baqing County has developed well. The roads are almost available in each house in Baqing County and No. 317 National Highway is available in the whole county. The total mileage of the highway in Baqing County is about 1088 kilometers.

Baqing County in Tibet – Folk Customs

Food: people there mainly eat Tsampa, beef, butter tea and milk, etc.

Accommodation: local people usually enjoy the nomad life. They often live in the Tibetan tent.

Marriage: Some traditional marriage customs are still kept such as the polyandry. In recent years, the monogamy was supported by more and more young boys and girls.

Festival: local people will enjoy the Tibetan Spring Festival respectively in December and January. The horse racing festival will be held in August every year.
