Bailang is a small county located in southern Shigatse, which was the manor of the King of Gyantse. Now this county is mainly developed with agriculture and animal husbandry.
Bailang County is situated in Southern Tibet, the south river bank of Yarlung Zangbo River and the middle reaches of Niantsu River. It is approximately 280 kilometers away from Lhasa and 49 kilometers away from Shigatse, 47 kilometers away from Gyantse. It is the major city of Shigatse Region.
This county stretches about 120 kilometers long from south to north, 50 kilometer from east to west, which covers 2758.98 square kilometers in total. Bailang County is clockwise border to Shigatse City center, Gyantse, Kangma County, Yatong County, Gangpa County and Sakya County.
Bailang County is belong to plateau temperate monsoon semi-arid climate with a dry environment. The solar radiation is very strong and the seasons feature distinctively. The mean annual precipitation is 361 mm, which mainly rains from May to October. The mean annual temperature is 5.9 ?, which the temperature difference is small in a year, but very distinctive in a day. The highest temperature is 26?, while the lowest temperature is -24.6?. In a year, the sunlight are 3200 hours, the frost-free duration are 120 -140 days, the windy days are about 100 days.
Bailang County attracts some tourists to visit with valley agriculture and wet land scenery of nature, pasturing area, grassland and lakes, also features cultural landscape such as famous Tsantsolin Monastery and Sere Tsote Monastery.
For example, Xetsulin Monastery was originally built in 1226 with a very characteristic national feature, Tangqin Monastery was firstly constructed as the adjunctive monastery in 1413. Additionally, there are some monasteries built for Tsizun Pricess and Wencheng Princess by Songtsen Gampo.
The famous Tibetan dramas in Bailang County are Gapu Tibetan drama and Patsa Tibetan drama. The traditional sports are horse racing, yak racing, wrestling, tug-of-war, stone lifting, stone hitting, and rope skipping, etc.
Gyantse Dama Festival was originally held in Gyantse on April 19th every year according to Tibetan calendar, including many different performances such as horse racing and shooting, wrestle, etc, which were also held in Bailang County and other places.
The accommodation condition is not as good as in other domestic cities of China such as in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, etc. There are some hotels, hostels, and guesthouses available in Bailang County.
